lol dude. so today at school, i was walking...and I saw some person, with an iPod touch 4 in an iPhone 4 case, with it UP to his ear and pretending to have a phone conversation. I thought I was seeing things, so I did a double take...hahahah, ya...it was real.

Many people discuss iOS in either the iPhone or iPad forums. Or possibly down in a software forum. I think we need a Forum for iOS discussion. Preferably at the top or bottom of the iPhone, iPad and iPod forums. Since these devices, the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad are now converging at 4.2, many features and elements relating to betas, release dates, and other functionality is relevant to all types of iOS device and it would be nice to have a central place to discuss it.

If there already is a place, it is neither obvious or easy to find. Nor should it be lumped into any of the main forums in Apple Applications or Apple Systems & Services without at least having its own sub-forum.

The border around the content area (just outside the drop shadow) isn't the same as the background...is that intentional?

there shouldn't be any pop-up ads.

    Please post a screenshot.

    arn

It doesn't happen every time. I'll try to collect one. The ad seems to intrude on different parts of teh screen at duifferent times. Trying to click on one of the forum buttons under the ad clicks the ad itself, and then takes one to that website.

    Annoying...

I tried it out and it doesn't work for me - I get some error about an SQL variable. I'll stick with Navicat for now I think.

Odd, it works great for me at home. I'll try it at work today and see how it does.

So recently I bought an iBook G4 1.33 GHz 12" in very good condition with a new genuine Apple battery and two genuine power supplies for € 150, not a bad deal I think.

Anyway, it has the stock Toshiba 4200 rpm hard drive and had 512 MB RAM when I purchased it. I've upgraded it to 768 MB RAM afterwards. At the moment it runs Tiger, but I think it's time to move on to Leopard mainly because ClicktoFlash for Tiger does not allow me to play YouTube videos with the QuickTime Player anymore and I can't find an alternative.

I've tried Leopard on it and it was not slow, but it felt not "smooth". I think the slow hard drive causes the pretty long app launch times and the sometimes sluggish feel.

Is it worth it to upgrade the hard disk to a modern 5400 rpm model, like the Samsung HM160HC? I don't do heavy duty stuff on the iBook, but when I use it I want it to run as fast as possible. Will this hard drive make Leopard run smoother?

I also plan on upgrading the memory to 1 GB, I can get a 512 stick from a friend.

What are your thoughts, is it a waste of money or will the upgrades make a noticeable difference? I have a retail Leopard dvd, so at least I don't have to buy that. ;)

This is my main concern: If I run a stream from a cable modem or fios provider to the website, and there are let's say 200 people on, wouldn't that pretty much choke the internet connection that's being used for the camera? I was wondering if there's some way to have the stream go to my web host and then maybe have people use their bandwidth. Kind of like streaming to Justin.tv where they act as the middle man so that your bandwidth isn't used up when more than one person is watching the stream.

[FONT="Verdana"]Don't worry had the same thing when in google pictures searching for German Art.

A good friend said it would be in the short term memory in Safari,(ie Ram/cache i think i am sure others will correct me, i am no whizz i just draw pretty pictures) so re boot the machine and it will be wiped.

    Well that worked for me.

I had a simular panic the classic FFS reaction, when buried in research and time limits, thus stressed.

    FFF :D

The server is behind our primary router and on our primary network. I sometimes use another computer on the same network, and sometimes use the server's own GUI to do tasks. Typically when I need to change something on the server from outside the network, I'll use screen sharing rather than remote server admin.

Hi everyone, I want to try out taiko drum composition on my MacBook Pro. However, I have some questions...well, many questions, actually.

    1. This might be a stupid question, but does GarageBand allow me to compose music "from scratch"?

    2. What's the difference between GarageBand and Logic Pro?

    3. Do I need a keyboard or whatever in order to start composing on Mac?

    4. Currently I only have GarageBand (which comes bundled within iLife). I did a search on Google and apparently GarageBand Jam Pack 4 comes with percussion which includes taiko drums. I haven't been able to find any reviews or videos on this, so could anyone tell me how good it is?

(Many things to consider before I decide to commit to getting Jam Pack 4/Logic Pro or whatever...)

No, the 6970 is a 2 year old card. It may have come OUT this year.

Being as powerful as a card from 2 years ago and being to years old is something different. The 6970 is from this year not from 2 years ago. However you may be right with the performance.

Mind sharing what the Beatles box set is Mr McMac?

Its called Beatles Anthology. Basically The complete Beatles story on 5 DVD's. Interviews with Paul, John, George, and Ringo, concert footage, etc. If you're a hardcore Beatles fan like I am, I recommend it highly

    Download Dropbox... done.
Keep it simple to set up, it's free and works perfectly. I use it to work on docs from home, work, my laptop and my iPad.
Pay a little and get a lot more server space.

    What he said

Dropbox rocks and the first 2GB are free with up to 5GB thru their referral program.

It basically sets up a folder with subfolders to sync to the cloud.

I went back to school last year and used dropbox everyday to sync files between my MacBook and Mac mini.

If I edit a word or excel file in class on my MacBook, dropbox automatically uploads the changes to the cloud. My Mac mini is running 24/7 and downloads the new edited version 10 seconds later 10 miles away from campus.

I set up my folders with their relative files in each, such as finance, accounting etc.
Sitting in class, I download my PDFs and power points from the schools server to my MacBook which instantly syncs to my home computer, works cross platform from your MacBook to your PC.

If you are all Mac, you can buy MobileMe. With the time capsule, and Back to My Mac, you can easily log into and control your home computer, such as reloading your handbrake or torrent queue. In Have both and find dropbox much better. I also have it on my iPhone and iPad.

Dropbox is what the MobileMe iDisk was meant to be, but much better and free.

I have found what I feel is a great solution for people with slower G4's or people that just want the site to stop hogging all their CPU. I recently discovered a great free app called "Mactubes" and have quickly fallen in love with it. Using this on my G4 1.8GHz I have watched video of all different quality/resolution and the CPU consumption ranges from 17-36%. The even better thing is that you can watch, search and download every video on youtube without ever going to the website. Gives you a great player window also that makes it much more like watching vids in VLC or something.

These results I speak of require one specific setting in the apps preferences..

    1. Download Mactubes here. (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/28608/mactubes) It supports 10.4.2+

    2. Launch it then open preferences. Set the player type to Quicktime like the image I have attached shows. The window mentions near the bottom you need Safari 4+ but that is only for the "Video player" mode which uses html5 but without actually launching Safari. QT player setting uses even less CPU.

I have also tried the flash and video player setting and they use more CPU. The quicktime interface takes flash out of the equasion all together which is amazing. Virtually every video on youtube is a lowres h.264 with a flash (.flv) wrapper. The QT setting ignores the wrapper and plays the h.264. Even a G4 400+ can play low res h.264 without the flash crap.

Please share your results if you try this. :)

Here is a link to a discussion of AAC issues. Hopefully your answer is there (if you've not already seen this website).

If you have a 15in PowerBook, then you will have to get a pc-card WIFI card (b or g standard). This is because Apples one that can be put in the airport slot does not havea very good range. The titainium is very good at blocking radio signals.

Ok, guys! Thanks for all your help but I finally fixed it by updating all iLife apps, and doing a reboot - ended the flashing dock problems and iPhoto works!
